New
Prices - As of July 1, 2005
We are pleased to announce that we have
lowered the prices for our domain name registrations.
And, because of the great response to last
year's introduction of the Multi-Year price savings, we are continuing
this discount service as well.
So now, not only is the initial price of
domain names lower, you still get to save for every additional year your
register or renew for.
The Canadian Internet Registration
Authority (CIRA) has lowered their base price for dot-ca domain names
effective July 1, 2005.
We also decided to lower our other top
level domain name extension prices to make them more accessible to our
existing clients.

The Benefits of the Easy Update Feature
The new Easy update feature is terrific because
it gives you more
freedom with your .Ca domain name registration than before. Without
the Easy Update feature,
when you made a change to your Administrative contact information with us,
your Registrar, you needed to complete an extra 'confirmation' step
with the Canadian Internet Registration Authority
(CIRA) using a User Account and Private Password. If the confirmation
process with CIRA was not completed....neither were your changes.
With "Easy Updates", once you have made your modifications
with us through our free modification functions on www.cadomains.ca
and CIRA is automatically
updated as well.
Any feature that can make the Management of your .Ca domain
name easier is a wonderful idea.
Why is the .Ca extension of
my domain name available, but not the .Com?
The introduction of .Ca extensions to the
Canadian market are relatively new when compared to the most popular
domain name extension, .Com.
Because of this, there are still MILLIONS
of different .Ca domain name combinations available when compared to the
heavily saturated .Com market.
Therefore, get the .Ca domain names while
you can.

Who are
CADomains.ca, Arvic,
and CIRA?
Arvic Search Services Inc. are the operators of
CADomains.ca. On
November 1 2000, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) took
over the operation of the .Ca registry and certified certain
companies to become .Ca domain name Registrars. At that time, we, Arvic,
were certified by CIRA and opened our domain name registration division called
CADomains.ca.
Since then, we have been specializing in providing our customers
professional, full service .Ca domain name services.
Arvic Search Services is also a Corporate
Paralegal, Registered
Trademark agent, and E-Commerce Solution firm. We have been incorporating and protecting Canadian
business for 25 years.

2. What is a domain name?
A domain name is a unique alpha-numeric address used to identify and
locate a particular computer on the Internet. It is used for web pages and
email addresses. For example, cadomains.ca is a domain name and its unique
web address is www.cadomains.ca and the email can be info@cadomains.ca, or support@cadomains.ca, etc. (please do not use these emails,
neither of them exist)
Domain names allow Internet users to type in an easy-to-remember name,
such as "companyname.ca", which gets translated by the Domain Name
System (DNS) into numerical addresses (Internet Protocol numbers) such as
207.25.50.210. The DNS allows ordinary internet users to find web sites
and send email without having to memorize the numerical addresses.
A domain name is hierarchical and those at the same level of the
hierarchy must be unique. For example, there can be only one cadomains.ca
The difference between
.Ca and .Com
Domain names are separated by different extensions. Top Level Domain
names such as .Com, .Net, and .Org are all top level domain names.
.Ca domain names are a Top Level domain, but they are a Country Code
extension for "Canada". Therefore, the .Ca extension signifies
that your web site is either a commercial or personal venture from Canada.
It is a very versatile extension with
numerous registration possibilities
still left. The .CA market is growing exponentially but you still have MILLIONS
of .Ca domain names to choose from.
4. Do I need a website
created before I can register a domain name? Absolutely
not. Registering your domain name before you have your web site built is
necessary in order to truly secure your business, product, service or
brand name on the internet. If you see that your name is available, get it
registered quickly. If not, someone may register it on you. We
do provide services with our registrations that allow you to make better
use of your domain names while you are looking into creating your web
site, or fully developing your business idea.
We have a free Domain Parking or URL Forwarding service that gives you
access to 1 email address with your domain name as the extension, or allows you
to point your recently registered domain name over to an existing web
site. Learn more about Domain
Parking and URL Forwarding ** You
will need to have a working email address in order to register your domain
name however. All your pertinent Passwords and documentation get sent to
the Administrative Contact's email address, therefore, you will need to
have a working email address before you register a domain name.
5. How do I choose a .CA domain name?
There are no hard and fast rules. Generally a domain
name is either your own name, your business name or a short
form of your business name. The best way to find a name is
to conduct some searches to determine what is available. We do provide a
Free Corporate name search of businesses and registered trademarks in
Canada. Login and make sure your domain is "legally" available
for you to register.
6. How do I know if the domain name I want has
already been taken?
The first part of the domain registration process is the domain search.
The domain search looks through the registry to determine whether the name
requested has already been registered to another party. In the event that
the name has not been registered, you can immediately proceed to step two
in the registration process in order to secure the name.
15. There are no rules for
.coms. Why are there
rules for a .ca domain name?
There actually are rules to registering
.Com domain names, however, there seem to be more when registering a .Ca
domain name.
Ultimately, the .Ca domain name extension
was created by Canadians, for Canadians. Therefore, certain rules exist to
make sure that these domain names are available to us. It is rather common
to have more rules on Country Code domain name extensions.
The current rules were implemented over the past 13 years to create a
manageable system for the Canadian internet community and, among other
reasons, to protect legitimate Canadian businesses from Cybersquatters who
register hundreds or thousands of names and resell them at a premium
price. The demand for .ca domain names was primarily from the Canadian
business community.
As of November 2000, the .Ca registry has
been mandated by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). To find out
more about CIRA, you should go to http://www.cira.ca/
Can I pay
by Cheque
Yes. We have the option to Register/Renew
your domain names via cheque payment. These options are available online,
however, if you have a special request, please contact us personally for a
tailor-made solution to your invoicing needs.
There is a small surcharge of $5.00 to
Renew via cheque payment, but Registering via cheque has no fee.
How
do I Modify my Domain name?
Use your Login Id and Password to enter the
"Renew/Modify" link above.
The Login table is case sensitive. You will
also be able to have your Login information emailed to you from the Login
table as well as the "Get
your Passwords" link above.
Why
must my .Ca and .Com be managed separately?
Because there are certain Rules and
Regulations pertaining to the registration and maintenance of .Ca domain
names, we have kept the management areas for these domains separated.
That way, we can better explain what
information is needed, and supply better instructions.
How
will I be notified when it is time for me to Renew my domain name?
We know how frustrating it is to have a
domain name get Suspended, therefore, we do our best to make sure the
Administrative contact listed for the domain name is aware of an upcoming
renewal date.
We send out a 30 day, 14 day, 7 day and 1
day Renewal notice to the Admin or Billing Contact email address we have
listed on file.
If we receive an "Undeliverable"
notice to our email notices, we will try and retrieve a valid email address off the web site,
or contact the Admin via telephone.
We also send out a Suspension Notice to
supply you further instructions on how to renew your Suspended domain
name.
7. How many .Ca domain names can I register?
Every Canadian organization, individual or
corporation can now register an many .Ca domain names as
they wish. There are no restrictions.
All of our registrations were created to
handle Bulk registrations.
3. Who uses .Ca domain names?
Organizations and individuals across Canada register
.Ca domain names
for commercial, educational, governmental, and personal use. The
organization should be incorporated or chartered in Canada, and the
administrative contact must be located in Canada. An individual must be a
resident in Canada and they must provide their Canadian address as their
administrative contact. There are no restrictions on the
number of .Ca domains a Canadian can now register.
Please see CIRA (Canada's domain name
authority) Canadian
Presence Requirements.
How
do I register a Municipal Domain?
Municipal domain names are reserved by CIRA
for the Municipality itself. Therefore, we would need to submit documentation
signed by a Village/Town/City official, such as the
Mayor.
Fill out the following document and contact
us in regards to further details. The price for a Municipal
registration is $40.00 CDN + GST.
Municipality
Documentation
How
to update a Domain Owner, or the Registrant?
In order to change the Domain Owner or
Registrant listed of a list of domain names, we would need to complete a
Registrant Transfer. The Registrant Transfer includes another year's worth
of registration, thereby acting like a renewal, and it would Transfer the
domains from the old Registrant to the new Registrant. The cost is $40.00
+ GST.
The CIRA User Account and Private Password
will be needed to complete the Transfer.
Please contact
us if you would like a Registrant Transfer Initiated.
How
do I get my Passwords?
Use the Get
Your Passwords link to have your Passwords emailed to the
Administrative contact email address listed for the domain. If that email
address is invalid, you will need to send a fax to 1-403-294-0944 on
corporate letterhead (if the registrant is a corporation) informing us of
the new Admin email address.
For .Ca domain names, you will have 2 sets
of Passwords for each domain name.
Your Login Id and Password
- to renew your domain name
- to change your DNS server information
Login ID: thedomainname.ca
Password: 1XX111X1
Your CIRA Account and Private Password
- to change Administrative (Admin) Contact information
- to change Technical Contact information
- to change Domain Owner information

18. I get a message
saying that another domain level already exists. What can I do?
1. If you currently own the other domain
name level that exists:
Example; You currently own "domain.bc.ca",
and you would now like to register domain.ca.
You can contact
us to have the new domain name registration added to your account.
2. If you do not own the other domain
name that already exists:
Example; the domain foundation.ca already
exists, and you would like to register foundation.mb.ca.
Contact
us to initiate the domain registration. These registrations can not be
initiated through the online forms on www.cadomains.ca.
You will need to contact the current
Administrative contact listed for foundation.ca to request their
permission to register the domain name. The current Admin contact will
need to have access to the CIRA User Account and Private Password and/or
have access to the email address listed in the WHOIS. Once
the current Admin has their CIRA User Account and Private Password, they
will need to use them to 'confirm' to CIRA through the CIRA confirmation
web site that they allow the new registration.
For clarification of why you need to get
permission to register the other domain level, please refer to the below
FAQ.
17. What is the
difference between ".ab.ca" and a ".ca"?
There are two types of domain name
extensions in the .Ca Registry.
1.Parent Domains (.ca)
2. Children Domains (.ab.ca, .bc.ca, .qc.ca, .on.ca, etc.)
In the beginning when the .Ca Registry
first came into existence, it was very difficult to register a Parent
domain name because of the regulations on the .ca extension. That is why
Children domains became very popular.
Children Domain names denote the province
in which the company does business in that owns the domain.
20.
I get an error message saying that "Registrant Already exists" This
means that the person or company you put as the Domain Owner/Registrant is
already listed with CIRA. If you currently own other .Ca domain names,
insert one of the domains in the field provided in the registration forms,
and your new domain name registration will be added to your current
account. Or, CIRA has already
captured your registration information from the forms before you could
complete the registration in a timely fashion. Then you will need to
contact our Domain
Registration Department. Please
provide the Registrant # CIRA Returns in the error in your email.
19. I can not Login
from your site, or on CIRA's site Check
to make sure you are using the right Logins and Passwords at the right
area. The Login Id and Password are for access to the free modification functions from www.cadomains.ca,
and the CIRA User Account and Private Password is to confirm information changes to CIRA. You will
only need to use the CIRA logins when CIRA sends you a Confirmation Email
and directs you to https://registrants.cira.ca/user.

are uppercase letters and numbers. If you don't know your User Name,
contact us, and we will email them to you. (This process is not automatic
like with the .ca's, it may take a day or so). Currently,
the Modification area for the .Com, .Net, .Org, .Info, .Biz and .Us is
currently being reconstructed. If you have updates, please contact
us. 21.
My website is down, and my technical person says something is wrong with
my domain
1. Your domain may need to be renewed
Complete a WHOIS search to verify the
domain names' renewal date
If the Domain Status field says "SUSP" - you need to Renew
your domain name
If the Domain Status field says "APPRVL" - you need to Confirm
your registration with CIRA. You'll need your Passwords.
If the Domain Status field says "AVAIL" - this domain is not
currently registered.
If the Domain Status field says "TBR" - this domain is cancelled
and waiting to be released for public registraiton.
2. Your DNS Server information may be
incorrect
Check with the WHOIS information to verify
the correctness of your DNS Servers
.Ca - use the "WHOIS

I
Renewed my domain, why is my web site still not active?
If your domain name was Suspended, then the
registry had disabled your DNS Servers causing service interruption of
your web site and access to any email accounts attached to your domain
name. There is a a delay
before the DNS Servers are re-activated by the registry.
With .Ca domains, the DNS Servers will be
re-activated within 24 hours.
With .Com, .Net, .Org, .Info, .Biz, and .Us
domains, the DNS Servers will be
re-activated in 24-72 hours.
I tired to get my Passwords, and the
program said that it "cannot find this domain"?
The Passwords tool is case sensitive,
therefore, please make sure that your domain name is all lowercase, and
without the "www." in front.
You might also need to make sure that there
are no spaces before, or after your domain name.
If you continue to have problems, please contact
us.

How do I Transfer .com, .net,
.org, .info, .biz, .us to you?
These Transfers do need to be personally
initiated by our staff. That way we can complete the necessary research
beforehand to ensure a successful Transfer process for you.
Things to keep in mind before requesting a
Transfer:
1. Confirmation: there will be some form of
"Confirmation" needed to successfully Transfer a domain name. It
may be by email, and you may need to Login to your current domain
management area to confirm. These are common practices, and if not
completed they will delay or cancel the Transfer process.
Please make sure the Admin email is valid,
or that you have your appropriate Login information to access your domain
info.
2. If the domain name is to be renewed
within 60-30 days, many Registrars will block the Transfer process.
Therefore, please contact us, and we can inform you on the likeliness of a
successful Transfer.
3. .Com, .Net, .Org, .Info, .Biz, and .Us
domain names can not be Transferred while in the "Suspension
Stage". You will need to renew with your current Registrar before we
are able to start a Transfer process.
4. If a domain name is in the
"Redemption Stage", then its release for re-registration is at
the discretion of the Registrar, and the Registry. Some domains are
released in 30 days, and others 90 days. To renew a domain in Redemption,
the charge is $100.00 CAD per domain.

Because of the certain Rules and
Regulations pertaining to the .Us domain name extension, your .Us
registration may be turned down at first. For a .Us, you must have all US

Renewed soon, but I have not received a Renewal notice yet?
We send out a 30 day, 14 day, 7 day, 1 day,

Either way, you will need to contact
us to have your email address updated and to renew your domain name.
How
do I renew my .Com, .Net, .Org, .Info, .Biz, or .Us domain name?

What
is the free Domain parking or URL forwarding service?
When you register your domain name with us,
you can either enable the Domain Parking or URL forwarding service
depending on which one best suits your needs.
The Domain Parking gives you access to 1 free email addresses with your domain as the extension, info@yourdomain.ca,
and a standard "Under Construction" page; while URL forwarding
points a domain name to another existing web site.
The Domain Parking is a
great service if you are securing your domain name for future use, but
would like to start using your personalized emails immediately. This
service is used when you do not have a web site created or hosted as of
yet.
Put your email on your business cards,
stationary and promotional material. Domain specific email addresses are
much more professional than the standard personal email accounts such as @hotmail.com,
@telus.net, @shaw.ca, @sympatico.ca, etc.
The Domain Parking emails are a webmail
format to be accessed from any computer, or you can have them download
directly to your personal computer through an Outlook or Netscape email
client program.
The URL forwarding service is perfect for
pointing an additional domain name to an existing web site. That way, you
can register both the .ca and .com extensions for your domain name and
have both of the domains point to the same web site. Now, you get the
added security that no one will register your business, brand, or product
name in additional extensions, but you still get your money's worth,
because they will all point to your web site.
If you have created a web site and are
hosting it on a free service, you can have your domain name stealthy point
to your http://www.freeservice/foldername/startpage.htm
URL. Your visitors only see http://wwwyourdomain.ca
in the address bar!
When will these services lapse? Once you
have built a web site and have found a web hosting company to launch your
site, you will need to replace the DNS Servers with your web hosting
company's. Therefore, once you replace the DNS Servers, the Domain Parking
or URL forwarding services will no longer be tied to your domain name.
You can activate your Domain Parking
services within your domain record. These services must be updated for
each domain name individually.
.EU
Extension now Available
The "Sunrise" pre-registration period for
Trademark owners is now over, and the .EU Extension is now available
publicly. The .EU extension is reserved ONLY for:
i) Companies or undertakings that have their
Registered Office Address, or central place of administration within the
European Community (EU).
ii) Organizations established in the European
Community
iii) European Residents or citizens.
The new .EU extension can be registered for 1 - 10
years as with many other extensions. The renewals for this extension need
to be completed prior to the 20th of the renewal month in order to be
successfully transacted.
For Example: if your domain name is registered for 1
year on April 7, 2006, then you must renew before April 7, 2007. However,
if your domain name is registered for 1 year on April 30, 2006, then you
must have your renewal completed before April 20th 2007 to be valid.
Please contact our staff personally to initiate your
.EU registration for $35.00 + GST a year. Our contact information is listed at
the bottom of every page of this web site.
CIRA
WHOIS Privacy Protection - June 10, 2008
.Ca domain name registrations now
have the most private WHOIS of all domain name extensions. Without having
to pay for a Privacy service fee all domain owners that are Individuals no
longer need to have their personal information publicly displayed in the
WHOIS database. No names, no telephone numbers, no addresses, no email
addresses…. No personal information at all.
Corporations can also apply to
have their public WHOIS information be made private if they can prove that
having their information online will be detrimental to their safety. A
good example would be for the growing number of home-based businesses
being started everyday in Canada.
You can use the above WHOIS search
link to see if this new Policy change has affected your domain name(s).

Phishing - Domain Registry of Canada, Jan. 5 2009
For a number of years, the Domain Registry of Canada
has been sending out Phishing direct mail letters to current domain name
owners in an effort to mislead busy, unsuspecting owners to Register or
Renew with them instead of the current Registrar.
We get numerous complaints from our clients about
these letters and therefore, we have attached an example
of the Phishing letter.
The main issue behind the domain Registry of Canada
letter is that many domain owners and administrators mistakenly believe
that Domain Registry of Canada is their current Registrar, and that they
are paying the renewal fee for their domain name. Instead, paying Domain
Registry of Canada would initiate a Transfer on your domain name(s), and
in most cases, the Transfers are never completed in time, and the domain
names are not renewed and websites go down.
Our clients have found it very difficult to receive
their money back from Domain Registry of Canada after-the-fact. Please
note that we do not send physical renewal reminders in the mail for your
Renewal. We will send a 30 Day, 14 Day, 7 Day, Last day and give you a

Canadian Reverse Domain Hijacking Finding – domainbits.com
April 20 2009
Globe
Media International Corporation tried to grab the generic domain ForSale.ca
from Bonfire Development, Inc., through a CDRP proceeding (the Canadian
equivalent of the UDRP) and failed. Not only did it fail, but it
resulted in Canada’s first ever finding of Reverse Domain Hijacking.
Background
In
January of this year, the domain ForSale.ca
dropped. After it was caught, it was purchased by Bonfire
Development for $29,000 CDN.
Trademark
The
plaintiff had a trademark on the domain For-Sale.ca.
Although one might ask how they managed to trademark that term, the CDRP
does not allow the panel to go behind the trademark. In the
circumstances, the panel found that the domain was confusingly similar
to the trademark.
Bad
Faith
Next,
the panel analysed whether the domain was registered in bad faith.
They found that it was not, and made some statements that I consider
very positive. They state: “the disputed domain is a
generic term over which the Complainant in this particular case cannot
claim exclusivity. This is so despite being the owner of a
trade-mark that is confusing with the domain name. The term “for
sale” is clearly and obviously a commonly used term by businesses and
members of the public to say the least, and is one over which the
Complainant would be hard pressed to assert a monopoly.”
It’s
clear that the Panel understands what a generic domain is and the
importance of a generic name being avaialable to all members of the
public. Kudos to them for this.
The
Panel further stated: “There is no question that the Respondent,
or related parties, have been found in the past to have engaged in the
practice of cyber-squatting. In particular, Shaun Pilford, who
appears to be related to the Respondent, is known to domain name panels.
However, this is not relevant to this particular case… While the Panel
does not endorse the Respondent’s unauthorized domain name
registrations, it needs to be proven that the Respondent was
cyber-squatting in
this case.”
That’s
good news too. Too often in UDRP decisions, if you lose one,
you’re at high risk of losing all future cases because you’ve been
branded a cybersquatter. The Panel is correct just to look at the
case before it, not the reputation of the parties.
Reverse
Domain Name Hijacking
The
Complainant had previously tried to get this domain before it dropped
via the CDRP and failed. Now it failed a second time and the
Respondent asked for a finding of reverse domain name hijacking.
The
Panel found that the Complainant has a history of registering trademarks
for .ca domains of well known brands. The Complainant had
registered Versace.ca, Mentos.ca, Zantac.ca, Smirnoff.ca and also filed
trademark applications for Versace.ca, Mentos.ca, Zantac.ca and
Smirnoff.ca. The Panel found that the Complainant had an extensive
history of abusing trademarks to try to give it rights to domains it
should not have, including in this case.
Adding
all of this to the fact that the domain is generic, the Panel found that
this was Reverse Domain Name Hijacking and in fact stated that the
Complainant appears to have engaged in filching.
Costs
have yet to be decided, but the CDRP allows cost awards of up to $5,000.
Congrats
to lawyer for the respondent Zak
Muscovitch for obtaining this finding!
